The Alternative Education Community School provides a comprehensive instructional program for district referred students (expelled, SARB, parenting teens) and Probation referred students. The Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, in conjunction with the 23 school districts in Riverside County, developed the county-wide plan for providing educational services to expelled students within the county pursuant to Education Code §48926. RCOE maintains the Community School program in zones throughout Riverside County to provide educational services to all school districts in the county, including those in rural/isolated settings. The RCOE Community School program is 180-days of instruction and includes the classroom-based program for expelled/ district referred students, independent study, and the program for parenting teens (formerly Cal-SAFE).

The Community School received a six-year term of accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in 2018 and provides students with curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure that students graduate from high school well prepared for college and careers. The instructional program is focused on the California (Common Core) State Standards along with rigorous and relevant learning activities that include Project-based Service Learning (PBSL), high impact classroom strategies and routines, and Positive Behavioral Support Interventions (PBIS) with restorative practices. Students are enrolled in UC a-g courses, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, and dual enrollment courses. Students are supported by systems to assess college/career/workforce readiness skills and have opportunities to complete the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET).

Our Community School program serves students who have been expelled from their home schools and need an opportunity to earn credits, do community service, and learn crucial academic and social skills that will help them return to their home school, graduate, and be contributing citizens in our society.

Arlington has a great extra-curricular and co-curricular schedule. We offer a hands-on culinary program where students learn all aspects of the food industry as well as secure and prepare orders for catering. Our athletic program gives students an opportunity to compete in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer and track and field against similar schools. We have also taken students on study trips to the Museum of Tolerance, Sea World, Natural History Museum, La Brea Tar Pits and Vocademy.

In addition, we offer counseling resources to our students – both individual and group – and Anger Management and Drug/Alcohol Intervention classes. Our students need an opportunity to overcome past challenges and create new beginnings for themselves, and the staff here at the Arlington Regional Learning Center is committed to helping them discover their potential for greatness.
