District Science Teacher’s Community of Practice (DST CoP)
The intent of these network meetings is for formal and non-formal secondary science teachers to come together as a Community of Practice to be informed about science assessments, data, grants, instructional materials, explore research-based strategies, obtain regional county office of education (COE) updates and information about upcoming events, and to be in community with other colleagues in similar professional roles.
The District Science Teacher's Community of Practice meetings include guest speakers and experts bringing timely, pertinent information regarding innovative science education topics. The meetings will be anchored on STEM/STEAM initiatives, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), topics related to CA Science Standards, and ELD standards.
We envision that these teacher leaders will share this information with others at their school site including administration. A "district science teacher leader" is a teacher, grade level lead, or department chair, who has been identified by their district office or their site as their designated site science representative.
NGSS Pedagogical Focus: Developing and Using Models
The following video explains the importance of using modeling as a strategy for student engagement in the elementary and secondary classrooms. The focus is on the three parts of a model. This becomes an easy strategy to implement widely. It promotes high quality science instruction for all.
