The SBE adopted the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve (CA NGSS) as required by California Education Code 60605.85. The NGSS Appendices A-M were also adopted to assist teachers in the implementation of the science standards and to aid in the development of the new science curriculum framework.

The California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS) can be viewed below by grade level Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI): Life Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, and Physical Sciences or by grade level Topic (e.g., Chemical Reactions, Structure and Function, or Space Systems).

All High School standards focus on three foundational disciplines: biology, chemistry and physics that begin at the elementary grades and in some cases, begin in Kindergarten. The rigor for each of the disciplinary core ideas progresses through high school.

The Disciplinary Core Ideas in the Next Generation Science Standards can be seen
here to show the progression of rigor for each disciplines:

In the three-course model, the earth and space science standards are interwoven into the three disciplines to produce courses with interdisciplinary connections to the core ideas of Earth and Space Science

The Living Earth
Chemistry in the Earth System
Physics of the Universe

The HS four-year model, "Every Science, Every Year" for High School is organized by performance expectations. Both of these models ensure our students have access to foundational knowledge for College and Career Readiness and sets them for success for the CAST/CAA parameters. Any other courses would be best as an elective course.
