This workshop will explore basic concepts of symmetry and asymmetry by folding and cutting paper to create engaging and balanced compositions. Balance in art and design is a key element in a composition and is an important consideration for overall visual interest. Your instructors, Joan Black and Dennis Johnson approach art from different perspectives; Joan from a traditional American craft perspective, and Dennis from a fine art perspective. Joan and Dennis have combined these perspectives in teaching workshops for the following prestigious organizations: Printmaking Workshop at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, CA; Printmaking and Indigo Dyeing Workshops at Stumptown Art Studio, Whitefish, MT; and Valentine’s Workshop at Riverside Art Museum, Riverside, CA.
Participants in the workshop will cut and fold paper into geometric shapes (circles, triangles, and rectangles) in any combination to create two abstract compositions, one symmetrical the other asymmetrical. Creating contrasting compositions with symmetry and asymmetry, while using a limited color palette, affords the participants an engaging and delightful result with a “less is more” approach. The definition of symmetry means a mirror image — one side is the mirror image of the other.
Symmetry can be found in nature (shells, plants, snowflakes) and can be created with an image that is the same on either side of the central axis. The axis or imaginary line passes through the center of the composition and divides it into identical halves.
The definition of asymmetry, also known as informal balance, means without symmetry. The attraction of asymmetrical balance to artists is its lack of a formula. This allows greater freedom which lends itself to more creative compositions. The difficulty lies in its lack of organization. This must be overcome by careful placement of objects and the use of other organizational tools such as form, repetition, scale, and figure/ground relationships.
